The most common symptom of bursitis is pain, swelling or tenderness at the site of inflammation. The pain can build up gradually, or be sudden and severe. Bursitis occurs when the bursae, or small fluid-filled sacs cushioning the bones, tendons and muscles near your joints, become inflamed. If you have bursitis, your affected joint may feel achy or stiff, or it may hurt more to move it or press on it. The area may also appear swollen and red. Bursitis often occurs near joints that perform frequent repetitive motion including the shoulder, elbow, hip, ankle and knee. It can also occur in the thigh, the heel or the base of the big toe.
Comprehensive Pain Specialists treat bursitis. We recommend scheduling a consult for bursitis treatment if you have disabling joint pain, pain for more than one to two weeks, excessive swelling or bruising, sharp or shooting pain or a fever.
